  5. I first met Ricky Kanis in Yallourn North when I called unexpectedly at his home which is a couple of doors away from mine! I was door-knocking our neighborhood, about climate change! I had not then met Ricky or his Mum.

Instead of getting the usual brush-off, I immediately sensed that Ricky was a warm, intelligent, and openly caring person, with a flexible, thoughtful mind and willingness to stand up and take action, to make our world a better place. He could have easily told me to get lost – instead, he listened warmly – and shared. We stayed in touch and I realized what a gem Ricky was! He was always “doing things”.

Rick managed some online websites, played lots of different guitars, wrote songs and music – and yet found time to care for others. He took “community” seriously and spoke out and called for positive change if he saw things that could be improved. He never sat idly by! He was generous of spirit. He was naturally protective and nurturing. Unique.

Rick was indeed one of nature’s true gentlemen who went out of his way, to support and encourage others in our town. Yallourn North has lost a loving, warm, and very decent man. Ricky’s family has lost a sensitive, loving son, brother, and friend. The world has lost a beautiful human being. Goodbye, Ricky Andrew Kanis! All love to you and yours! Your neighbors and friends, Libby Mitchell and Allan Morse. We will remember the good times and thank you for being special, in all the important ways.

  8. I remember vividly the day you came to Australind Primary School, your charisma and energy was larger than any person I had ever met. We were friends and brothers from that day and shared many triumphs and devastating losses. You always made a path through and still found a way to bring light and love to everyone, even when you were suffering the most.
