We are saddened to lose our beloved Dad, John. We will always cherish his sense of humour and deep love for family. Thanks Mum for taking such good care of him in the last few months. He wanted to be at home, with you, till the end.
October 1, 2026Dear Dad,
you were such a softie at heart and so generous-always quick with a $50 note for a night out! When I was nervous before a job interview you said “Don’t go. Just work for us.” You were always wanting to make life easier for us.
You never said anything unkind about anyone and you never said “I don’t want to go to work tomorrow.”
Cattle were your life. You loved it and you loved talking cattle with Ben and I loved going to the farm with you as a kid.
How good that Hugh played for Morwell in your last year and you could present him with your old #6!
How wonderful that you could live to such an old age and all of your 6 children and the extended family wanted to be with you and help you to the end.
Well done Mum for caring for him so well.
We will continue to say “Exactly!” and “Go on!” and think of you with love.

With heartfelt condolences on the passing of John, a dearly loved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle.
We are so very sorry for your loss. Wishing you comfort in the love of family, strength in the support of friends, and peace in the treasured memories you hold close.
Rest peacefully, John!
Pat and the Hourigan Family.Dear Pa,
I’ll always picture you with carrot cake, ham sandwiches and a beer stubby, or enjoying a nap. I’ll miss your chuckle, your “Go on,” and especially the way you said my name: “Oh, Steph-Nee.”
You were always kind and encouraging, even if you couldn’t quite understand why I wanted to live so far from Morwell. You always asked about my adventures, sometimes getting the places a bit muddled. Asking how Mexico was when I lived in Saudi Arabia, and calling your friend Ketut in Bali “Kaput,” still make me smile.
I’ll always treasure going to the farm as a kid, riding on the back of the ute with Gabby and Mick and yelling “Stop!” so we could jump off and pick mushrooms. Those simple pleasures were such a lovely core part of our upbringing.
I’m so glad Freddie and Lio got to know you too and loved seeing you on our visits to Australia.
Thank you, Nan, for loving and looking after him so well.
I’m sad I can’t be there in person, but we’ll be paying our respects from afar. I’m so glad our beautiful Darling family was with you right up until the end. The love you leave behind in our family is something we feel even on the other side of the world in Amsterdam.
Love you, Pa. Thank you for all those lovely memories.
Love,

StephanieDear Jean, Mary, Brendan and all the Darlings. As my dear Dad Ernie said many times “Darling by name and Darlings by nature. With over 100 years of family associations and us living over the road we regard you as family. This is like losing a brother. My heartfelt sympathy and love go to you all and may you know God’s comfort and peace. I am so sorry I have a long-standing medical appointment I must keep tomorrow so I can’t be there with you all. I will never forget how when your kids knew Auntie Ella and Mary and Doug and others were going to Dad’s 80th and the youngsters said “we are going to Ernie’s party too” and we were thrilled to see I think it was 14 come along” and Brendan would always provide sandwiches for family functions. Such was our relationship so this parting is not easy. Will be thinking of you all
October 8, 2026Uncle Johnny. I can’t find the right words. I am so lucky to have grown up with you (and Aunty Jean) next door. Such a fun, reliable, supportive force. Your humour, your voice is such a constant in my life. The Darling family is like nothing else. Thank you for raising the best cousins, for being amazing next door neighbours, for loving your brother and wingman fiercely. I will miss you. Thanks to Toddy for your unwavering love and care. Go gently, Silver. “Exactly”. ❤️
October 8, 2026Pa you were a great man, a kind soul and so generous to those around you. Loved dearly by the family and beyond.
Lots of great memories of the farm – you in your absolute element and cherished memories of Darling gatherings.
I feel so honoured to have had all these years with you and that Zoe was able to have some time with you too.I remember when we went to Bali for Dad’s 50th and you were the most loved Australian tourist – making best friends with all the local vendors. Choosing generosity over bartering and probably paying way too much for a Bintang hat!
Thinking of you Nan and sending all our love and condolences. Pa will be greatly missed and I hope you can take comfort in all the wonderful memories we have of him.
Rest in peace Pa John.
