  11. Sincerest condolences to the Smethurst Family on John’s passing. I met John almost 30 years ago when I joined the game-day stats team at Hawthorn. John, who led the team, was always friendly, calm when the pressure was on, and considered. It was a great pleasure to work with John and his son, Darren. What a huge contribution John made to the HFC over such a long period. Regrettably, I am unable to attend John’s service. Bruce Corben.

  18. To Jenny, Darren & Sue, we are so very sorry for your loss. John was one of nature’s truest gentlemen, and we will miss his wise counsel and sage advice. We have many happy memories to look back on over the past 16 years. Haydn & John’s mutual love of Hawthorn always part of the chatter, and also including the Trewin family, especially John’s dear friend Tom Trewin. We will miss John so much, but we are comforted that he is reunited with his beloved Francie. What a formidable couple and team together they made. I think the Hawks might now have an extra advantage come finals time. #AlwaysHawthorn.
